Fiber Phone, a land line service for Fiber users

Google has announced a new landline service called Fiber Phone, an extension of the Fiber internet service currently offered in select cities.

Fiber Phone is meant to give you everything you want from a home phone service, plus a lot more. For $10/month, you get unlimited local and nationwide calling, and the same affordable rates as Google Voice for international calls. You can keep your old phone number, or pick a new one. You can use call waiting, caller ID, and 911 services just as easily as you could before. Fiber Phone can also make it easier to access your voicemail—the service will transcribe your voice messages for you and then send as a text or email.

Once this service made available in your area you can simply sign up and get the service through a simple installation process. You’ll be provided a Fiber Voice box for use with any home phone, as the service does not come with the phone. You’ll get features like caller ID, call waiting, and whatever you’re used to with a landline, plus more. Voicemails can be transcribed and emailed to you while you’re out of the house, and you can even have Fiber Phone route calls to your cell phone if you’re not home.

It’s coming to only a few areas for testing, but will eventually roll out to all Fiber cities.
